The Boy Scouts of the Philippines and the Children's Committee of the Shopping Center Management Corp. or SM linked arms in joining the global celebration of International Children's Book Day today with simultaneous activities across all 35 SM malls nationwide.
Highlight of the celebration is a storytelling or reading activity by noted celebrities. Hundreds of KID and KAB Scouts from Luzon to Mindanao will troop to SM branches nearest their schools or units to participate in the affair.
Committee Chairman Royce Cabunag said the young Scouts will be treated to a day of fun with bookreading and other activities that aim to cultivate a love for reading and inspire kids into reading early to boost their development. He said the activity will also highlight children's books as a tool that would reinforce rich and colorful imagination, instill proper values, and encourage children to explore and learn about other cultures.
"It's big wide world out there, we need to explore them through reading. By teaching young Scouts to open their books and read about the whole world, they will be richer in imagination and this will inspire them to explore the world," he said.
He said primary, the Scouts will have fun experiencing the wonderful world of books through storytelling activities by celebrities and personalities, book drives, exhibits, book signing, "writeshops" for children's literature, costume contests among others.
Boy Scouts of the Philippines Secretary-General J. Rizal C. Pangilinan said the BSP "is happy to tie up with SM's Children Committee in bringing colorful and relevant activities to young Scouts. He said SM's project runs parallel to indoor projects being offered by the BSP to its young members.
International Children's Book Day is being celebrated every April 2 in time for the birthday of the world-famous Danish author of well-loved fair tales and poems Hans Christian Andersen. The affair aims to inspired love of reading and to call attention to children's book.
The Philippines celebrates the affair every third Tuesday of July in commemoration of the publication of Dr. Jose Rizal's "Ang Pagong at ang Matsing (The Monkey and the Turle)."
Other partners in the nationwide affair are Department of Education, the National Book Development Board, Philippine Board of Books for Young People and Vibal Publishing.
"With more than 2.8 million customers going to our malls daily, and with more than 1.2 million of our customers being children, we have put it upon ourselves to make our malls not just child-friendly, but more importantly, we have created opportunities and avenues for a kid's growth and learning," Cabunag said.
