The Boy Scouts of the Philippines opened yesterday its 6th National Rover Moot at the BSP Camp Samal, Tumauini, Isabela.
The seven-day affair, which will be attended by thousands of Rover Scouts from around the country is being hosted by Isabela Council in partnership with local government units of Isabela province and Tumauini municipality and the Department of Education.
Rover Scouting is a service division of Scouting for young men and women. It was founded in 1918, following the successful growth of the Scouting Movement, and was intended to provide a Scouting program for young men who had grown up beyond the age range of the core Scout section. It was quickly adopted by the National Scouting organizations around the world including the BSP.
Rovering started in the Philippines when the BSP separated from the Boy Scouts of America on Oct. 31, 1936. It was discontinued in 1966.
In 1990, the BSP resumed a Rovering program for men and women of 16 to 24 years in age. There is also a Rover Peers section for those over the age of 25.
Rover Moot is a gathering of Rovers and Roverette. The activity focuses on community immersion where Rovers are scattered in villages located in host province, to render community services. This year, eight barangays have been selected to benefit from the three-day immersion program. The Rovers will clean canals, plant trees, repair school buildings and even build houses.
There will also be in-camp activities where the participants will be taught various crafts and emergency preparedness.
The opening ceremony was attended by BSP National President Jejomar C. Binay and other members of the board, head of local government units and officers of Isabela Council headed by Erlinda Agor.
