The Boy Scouts of the Philippines has launched a unique project aimed at planting several varieties of trees at camps owned by the organization throughout the country. The project will be the Movement’s contribution to the global effort to save the environment from total degradation.

Dubbed “Go Green! Go for the Real Thing,” the BSP, in partnership with government and private organizations will plant the trees and nurture them for years to ensure that they will grow to maturity before they could be left to grow on their own.

The massive tree planting is undertaken jointly by the BSP, the Department of Education, where the bulk of the BSP membership belongs and the Coca-Cola Export Corp., a multi-national company which has chosen the project as its own outreach project in the country.

BSP National President and concurrent Makati Mayor Jejomar C. Binay said the project “will be totally different from all other tree planting projects as it will be supervised and maintained by the Boy Scouts for a period of time to ensure that the plant will grow.

“This means that a Boy Scout who planted a tree will go back to the area and nurture the tree until it grows,” he said. He said the BSP has also created a merit badge solely for the project as a reward to any member who will complete the requirements.

Another unique feature of the project is that the BSP shall produce its own seedlings and saplings from the nurseries it will be constructed in some select areas where there are BSP camps, Binay said.

The launch was attended by Manila Mayor Alfredo S. Lim, together with members of the BSP national executive board, council executives, Coca-Cola officers headed by CCBPI president David Lyons, TCCEC Vice President Public Affairs & Communication JB Baylon, and more than a hundred Scouts called “Green Patrols,” who demonstrated he proper planting processed from seed propagation to actual planting of the seedlings.

“With this project, we envision a green planet, a place where men and nature co-exist harmoniously,” he said.
